MATERNAL SERUM ALPHAFETOPROTEIN

- important components of surfactant, a phosphoprotein that the alveoli begin to form at about the 22nd to 24th weeks of pregnancy - it lowers surface tension of the lungs that facilitates extrauterine expiration - Prevents lung collapse - Determines fetal lung maturity

LECITHIN

Amniotic fluid is aspirated by a needle inserted through the abdominal and uterine walls; indicated early in pregnancy (14-17 wk) to detect inborn errors of metabolism, chromosomal abnormalities, open NTD (neural tube defect); sex-linked disorders after 28 wk; determine lung maturity

AMNIOCENTESIS

- Response of sound waves against solid objects - Allows visualization of the uterine content

ULTRASOUND

- Is a daily recording of fetal movements to assess active & passive fetal states in pregnancy - Ask the mother to observe fetal movement.

FETAL KICK COUNT

- Retrieval and analysis of chorionic villi for chromosome analysis - Transcervical or transabdominal; may be done as early as 5 weeks, but more commonly done at 8-12 weeks of pregnancy

CHORIONIC VILLUS SAMPLING

second- and third-trimester method to aspirate umbilical cord blood (location identified by ultrasound) to test for genetic conditions, chromosomal abnormalities, fetal infections, hemolytic or hematological disorders

PERCUTANEOUS UMBILICAL BLOOD SAMPLING

Assesses 4 to 6 parameters (fetal breathing movement, fetal movement, fetal tone, amniotic fluid volume, placental grading, and fetal heart reactivity/ reactive NST)

BIOPHYSICAL PROFILE

- Measures the response of fetal heart rate to fetal movement - Determines fetal wellbeing - Performed to assess placental function and oxygenation or when fetal kick count is lower than 2 movements /hour
