Provides adequate visibility and access to thorax and Mediastinum

> Use blanket to COVER any exposed area other than the one being assessed > EXPLAIN procedure to be done > Patient with heart disease often experiences, SHORTNESS OF BREATH WHILE LYING FLAT.

Inspect and Palpate Left & Reminight Carotid Arteries

> Palpate one CAROTID at a time > Avoid palpating simultaneously- OCCLUDE BOT ARTERIES AND PATIENT LOSE CONSCIOUSNESS due to reduced brain circulation > Carotid are the only site TO ASSESS QUALITY OF PULSE WAVE (amplitude and contour) > auscultate

- elastic, resilient smooth contour, equal strength

Normal

- Thrills, vibration Loose contour (hardening, arteriosclerosis)

Abnormal

Aortic area

- at the 2nd ICS on left

Pulmonic area

-moving down left side of sternum to the 3rd ICS

Second pulmonic area (Erb)

-at the 4th left ICS along sternum.

Tricuspid area

- (apex) move fingers laterally to client's left to locate 5th ICS at left midclavicular line.

Mitral/Apical area

- at the base/inferior tip of the sternum (abdominal aortic pulsation)

Epigastric area
