• Bring attention to important details or information • Help identify main ideas, key words, and concepts • Activate schema or prior knowledge • Provide information that may not be written in the text itself

title

divides a section of a text and indicates the main idea of this text section

heading

words written in a dark and thick print within the main body of a text.

bold print

font slanted to the right within the main body of text

italics

text located near a picture, map, diagram, etc. that explains what it is

captions

phonetic representation of a word usually located in parentheses after the word has appeared in the text

pronunciation guide

listed text that is indented and aligned using a dot symbol, or dash in front of each idea

bullets

additional text within a box, often with a shaded background; located at the sides, top, or bottom of a page

side bar

picture taken by a camera; captions explain what is shown

photograph
