Naming the Child in England and Italy in the Middle Ages

People in the Middle Ages may have given first names even more importance than we do today.

中世の人々は、現在よりもはるかに大きな重要性を名前に与えていたかもしれない。

To quote Leon Battista Alberti, writing in Florence, Italy, during the 1430s, “Beautiful and magnificent names somehow add luster to our virtues and our dignity, and make them still more splendid and admirable.”

In England, after the Norman Conquest in 1066, the old Germanic names inherited from the Anglo-Saxons largely became less popular, and they were replaced by a range of saints’ names.
