1
How should monitors be positioned in regard to each other and the listener?
In an equilateral triangle, placed around ear level and tilted slightly inward. A distance of 8-12 feet is preferred.
2
What is the sample rate and bit depth of the studio 1 template?
48kHz and 24 bit
3
How is sound stored digitally?
A circuit called an analog to digital converter (ADC) creates a numerical representation of an audio signal’s amplitude and frequency.
4
How is digitally stored sound played back?
The numerical representation of an audio signal is read by a circuit called a digital to analog converter (DAC), which allows the original analog signal to be recreated.
5
What is Sampling?
The time component of digital audio conversion. An incoming analog signal is sampled or “snapshotted” a certain amount of times per second, and each sample is assigned a binary number.
6
What is PCM?
Pulse Code Modulation. It is a type of circuitry based on switches turning on/off to write binary code when converting audio to digital.
7
What is aliasing and when does it occur?
When the output of digital audio conversion doesn’t match the original analog wave input due to missing frequencies. This happens when the sample rate used was too low to capture all the frequencies within an audio signal.
8
What is the Nyquist Theorem?
The sampling rate must be at least 2x the frequency range of the signal.
9
What is quantization?
The level/ dynamic range aspect of digital audio conversion. It uses binary code to record the amplitude of an incoming audio signal.
10
What are MSBs and LSBs, and how to they relate to signal level?
Most significant bits (1 bits) and Least significant bits (0 bits) Low signal levels encode as LSBs and high volumes signals encode as MSBs.
11
What is a digital word?
The quantity of binary digits used to represent an audio signal.
12
Each bit is responsible for 2 discrete quantizing levels (possibility of being a 1 or 0). How does adding bits chage the number levels?
Each bit doubles the previous amount of levels. 1 bit = 2 levels 2 bit = 4 levels, 3 bit = 8 levels, 4 bit = 16 levels etc.
13
What is the dynamic range of one bit?
6dB
14
What is Jitter?
Instability between the encode and decode stages of digital audio recording.
15
How many consecutively clipped samples need to occur for there to be audible distortion?
Three. One or two clipped samples can light up on a digital meter, but our ears won’t perceive it as distortion.
16
What is an AES/EBU connector?
Audio Engineering Society/European Broadcast Union. An XLR cable that carries two channels of stereo digital audio. NOT the same as an xlr mic cable.
17
What is a SPDIF connector?
Sony/ Philips Digital Audio Interface. A single pin RCA connector used to carry up to two channels of digital audio. Commonly found on consumer level equipment such as DVD players.
18
What is an optical/ Toslink / Lightpipe connector?
A consumer grade fiberoptic cable that carries 2 channels of digital audio. Some semi-pro audio gear uses these to carry up to 8 channels of audio.
19
What is a TDIF Connector?
Tascam Digital Interface. A multi channel of digital audio in and out (16 channels totals.)
20
What is a MADI connector?
Multiple Audio Digital interface Fiber Optic transmission of 28, 56, or 64 channels of digital audio, with sample rates of up to 96kHz and up to 24 bit depth.
21
What is a DANTE connector?
Digital Audio Network through Ethernet. Used to carry large amounts of digital audio channels over a large distance.
22
What are the two main components of a digital audio file?
The header, which store information such as the sample rate and bit depth, and the audio data, which is the raw binary code
23
What is a CODEC and what are the two types?
A compression- decompression device used to reduce the file size of digital audio. There is Lossy and Lossless
24
What is lossless compression?
Compression in which all the original date can be recovered when the file is decompressed.
25
What is lossy compression?
Compression in which pieces of the original data are permanently removed from the file to reduce its size.
26
What are some examples of lossless file types?
Wav AIFF AU CDDA/CD
27
What are some examples of lossy file types?
ACC MP3 Windows Media audio
28
What is bit rate?
The number of bits processed per minute/ second.
29
What is 0VU equal to on a DBFS meter?
- 18 dBFS
30
What is room colouration?
The reinforcement and unnatural lingering of certain tones within a room after the sounds stops, based on it’s size, shape, and material.
31
What is the +4 on a compressor?
Output Meter for pro audio.
