1
Rule and definition of absolute block signalling
One train in, One section at, One time
2
What is this signal called
Semaphore distant
3
What is this signal telling you to do
Be prepared to stop at next signal. Horizontal yellow caution
4
What is this signal and what is it telling you
Semaphore distant. Clear/proceed at line speed. All associated stop signals are in clear position. Green if dark
5
What is this signal and what is it telling you
Fixed distant signal. Next signal will always be at danger. Be prepared to stop
6
What is this signal and what is it telling you
Colour light distant signal. Modern semaphore. Identified by black signal post plate showing arrow up. Signal number might also be on it. On caution
7
What is this signal and what is it telling you
Semaphore stop signal. Red rectangular arm. Horizontal = stop as does red light
8
What is this signal and what is it telling you
Semaphore stop signal set to proceed. Arm at 45, go. Green light too
9
What is this sign and what is it telling you
Track circuit plate. Signaller knows train is present as small current goes through the track. Wouldnt need TCOCs in theory but err on side of caution and put them down
10
What is this signal and what is it telling you
Intermediate block signal. Breaks up the section, allows 2 trains in 1 section
11
Why do we have signals
Provides space between trains, Stop conflicting movements, Tells us if line ahead is occupied
12
Rule of signalling
One train, One section at, One time
13
How are Track Circuit Block TCB signals controlled
Controlled by the passage of trains. Presence of train activates track circuit. Places rear signal in red when activated. TCB is defined as a line that is continuously track circuited throughout
14
What is a section
A section of track is between 2 stop signals
15
Principles of TCB Track circuit block
Any interruption will set rear to danger, Designed to be fail safe, Fixed signals divide the track into sections, Controlled by the passage of trains
16
What does this signal aspect mean?
Proceed/clear
17
What does this signal aspect mean?
Preliminary caution. Be prepared as next signal displaying cautionary aspect
18
What does this signal aspect mean?
Caution, next signal displaying stop
19
What does this signal aspect mean?
Stop at danger
20
What does this mean?
Signal not in use. Black bag white cross
21
What type of signal is this and how is it controlled?
Controlled signal. Operated by signal box or ground frame. White plate black writing or black plate white writing
22
What type of signal is this and how is it controlled?
Automatic signal. Controlled by passage of trains. White plate black horizontal line
23
What type of signal is this and how is it controlled?
Semi automatic signal. Controlled by either signal box or passage of trains
24
What are these indicators and what do they mean
Junction indicator, Set of white light indicates route , No lights will be lit for main route
25
How do you know when junction indicator is defective
2 or less lights lit
26
How are routes identified
123 left 456 right
27
What is this indicator called
Route indicator, Figures or letters above or at the side, Usually found at locations of complex or confusing routes
28
What is permissive block?
Allows more than one train in one section at a time
29
What is this called
Position light signal
30
When two diagonal lights are shown Train movement can proceed at ... towards the next... an be prepared to stop...
Caution, Train, stop signal or buffer stop, Short of any train, vehicle or obstruction
31
Bell buzzer code 1
Stop
32
Bell buzzer code 2
Ready to start
33
Bell buzzer code 2-2
Do not open doors (Driver and TM speak)
34
Bell buzzer code 3
Set back (3 letters in set)
35
Bell buzzer code 3-3
TM and driver speak
36
Bell buzzer code 4
Slow down
37
Bell buzzer code 6
Draw forward (forward has more letters than 3, so its 6)
38
Bell buzzer code 9
Police assistance required
39
Why do trains have different classifications
Gives signaller priority order
40
Where is classification stated
Headcode
41
Class 1
Express passenger train or rescue loco TBird
42
Class 2
Ordinary passenger trains
43
Class 3
Freight, ECS specially authorised, priority empty morning sets
44
Class 4,6,7,8
Freight
45
Class 5
Empty coaching stock
46
Class 9
Highest priority. Class 373 eurostars, or any train specifically authorised such as royal train
47
Class 0
Light locomotive, tbird not rescuing
48
What is single line working
When one line of a double becomes blocked. Single line working by pilot allows trains to travel over the other line in either direction at 50 mph max
49
Authorised to pass a signal at danger reasons. Always hear it from driver
Shunting, Examining the line, Evacuating passengers, Ahead of signal, Single line working, Pilot working, Assisting failed train, Defective signal, Temporary block working, Emergency special working
50
What do these mean
Stop as they are 2 horizontal lights even if white. Used for shunting
51
What does this signal mean
Proceed with caution as its a raised 45 degrees not horizontal
52
What are these and what do they do
Banner repeaters. Works in conjunction with main signal in areas with poor sighting. horizontal stop 45 degrees proceed
53
How does an OFF indicator work
Works in conjuction with the signal to which it applies. When signal is cleared the OFF illuminates
54
What are these and what are they used for
Right away indicator. Lets driver know station work and safety checked complete and train is secure
55
What is temporary block working?
Driver authorised to pass 2 or more signals at danger, Sometimes during track circuit failures, Allows train to pass multiple damgers without signallers permission , Hand signaller in attendance supervising, Forms must be completed, 50 mph limit
56
What is Emergency special working ESW
ESW uses direct contact between driver and signallers. No hand signallers, Uses GSMR to talk to signaller , Same operational principles as TBW
57
What is station limits
Home to section signal
58
What is a block section
Signal from last section to home signal of the next
59
What is the braking distance
Distant signal to the home signal
