One of the most famous women in American history was Clara Barton, who spent her life helping other people.

Clara first became famous for her efforts during the U.S. Civil War.

When the war started in 1861, Clara noticed that many wounded soldiers died from a lack of medicine, so she began collecting medical supplies to give to army hospitals.
