How does the release cable work on a type 11 operating head?

A spring loaded cutter spindle supports three steel balls. When cocked the spring is compressed and the steel balls are pressed radially outward,by insertion of the tapered slug on the end of the release cable into the spindle bore, the steel balls then rest against the seat preventing the movement of the spindle. when operated the steel balls roll inward releasing the compressed spring pushing the cutting spindle down the body to pierce the cylinder disc.
