What one privilege does the average teenager want most?

平均的な十代の若者が最も欲しがる1つの特権とは何だろうか。

Many would probably say “the right to drive.”

多くの者はおそらく「車を運転する権利」だと言うだろう。

To a teenager, a driver’s license seems like a ticket to freedom:

若者にとって、運転免許証は自由への切符に思われる。

Teen drivers can go where they want when they want－up to a point.

つまり、十代のドライバーは、（運転免許証があれば）ある程度までは行きたいときに行きたい場所へ行けるのである。

However, teenagers who put themselves in the driver’s seat often end up facing effects and responsibilities that they may not have anticipated.

しかし、運転席に身を置く若者たちは、自分が予想もしていなかったような結果と責任に直面する結末に至ることがよくある。

For a teenager, a driver’s license is a big step toward independence.

十代の若者にとって、運転免許証は独立への大きな一歩である。

Teen drivers do not have to count on parents, friends, bus schedules, or good weather.

十代のドライバーは、親や友人、バスのダイヤ、好天を当てにしなくてよい。

They are not always asking favors, making last-minute arrangements, or following order people’s schedules.

彼らは（自分の行動のために）お願いをしたり、ぎりぎりになって調整をしたり、他の人の予定に従ったりということをいつもしているわけではない。

They can accept jobs on the other side of town, and they will not miss parties because they are stranded at home without a ride.

彼らは町の反対側での仕事を引き受けることができるし、車に乗せてもらえず家に取り残されるためにパーティーに行けないということもないだろう。

However, a teen who no longer needs a chauffeur may unexpectedly become one.

しかし、お抱え運転手をもう必要としなくなった若者が、思いがけずお抱え運転手になることがあるかもしれない。

Many teen drivers find that they are now the ones asked to drive a sister to school or to go to the store for milk.

多くの十代のドライバーは、自分が今では妹を学校へ車で連れて行ったり、店へ牛乳を買いに行ったりするのを頼まれる立場になっていることに気づくのである。

Another effect is that carless friends－including some who never help with expenses－ask for rides.

別の結果として、車を持たない友人たち－決して費用を負担しない連中を含む－が乗せてくれと頼んでくることもある。

Owning a car also costs money－in ways a passenger cannot appreciate.

また車を所有するということは、車に乗るだけの人には正しく理解できない面（＝見えないところ）でお金がかかるものだ。

Gasoline is not free, insurance for teenagers is expensive, and maintenance (not to mention repairs) drains finances.

ガソリンは無料ではなく、十代（のドライバー）向けの保険は高額であり、（修理代は言うまでもなく）維持費も出費がかさむ。

To meet car expenses, teenagers often have to work more hours and thus have less free time.

車の諸経費を支払うために、若者たちはしばしば（アルバイトで）働く時間を増やさなければならず、したがって自由な時間が少なくなる。

Unfortunately, some teenagers respond to that situation by studying less, which causes their grades to drop, which in turn may cause their parents to take away their car keys for several weeks.

残念ながら十代の若者の中には、勉強の時間を減らすことによってその状況に対応する者がいる。そして、それが原因で成績が下がって、そのために今度は親が数週間車のキーを取り上げるようなことになるかもしれない。

The ultimate effect of getting a driver’s license, then, is that it may help teenagers to grow up.

したがって、運転免許証を手に入れる最も重要な効果は、それが十代の若者たちが成長するのに役立つかもしれないということである。

Teen drivers find that they have to balance freedom with responsibility and learn how to afford their dream of driving without losing other things.

十代のドライバーは、自由と責任とのバランスを取らなければならないことを知り、どうすれば他のものを失わずに車を運転するという夢を持ち続けることができるかを学ぶのである。

Car keys can be the keys to a lot of fun and independence, but teenagers need to realize that a driver’s license, like most things in life, comes at a price.

車のキーは多くの楽しみと独立を手に入れるかぎになりうるが、若者たちは運転免許証が、人生のほとんどの事物と同様に、かなりの代償を伴うものであると理解する必要がある。
